Artist Description

Using genuine animal skulls as the raw form, Maria D’Souza combines design, color, and dimension to create one of a kind pieces. Her beaded animal skull art is unique in that Maria does not view the form of the skull as a canvas that she is bound to. She views it more as a frame to create within. She uses semi-precious and precious stones, seed beads, Bali silver, patina copper, exotic leathers, and other materials to create patterns of symmetry, depth, and motion. Continually striving to create pieces that have never been done before her beaded skulls constantly reflect the use of new materials and artistic techniques.
Maria D’Souza’s artistic inspirations are as varied as the cultures and places she has lived in and experienced. Ethnically Portuguese and Indian, she has lived in and studied art in such varied locales such as Goa India, Portugal, London, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, The Turks and Caicos, and Bahrain. Having made the moved to the U.S. in 2010, she fell in love with the America West and the art forms native to the region. She has since married and now has a studio in Cincinnati Ohio and travels regularly out west and overseas to attend art shows and meet with clients.
Her works include iconic North American animals such as the Bison, Longhorn Bull, Big Horn Ram, Deer, and Antelope. Many African and Middle Eastern species such as the Oryx, Blesbok, Impala, and Kudu are used as well. She also enjoys creating private commissions from skulls provided by hunters and safari clubs.
Ms. D’Souza’s works have been enjoyed in private collections in North America, Europe and the Middle East. She has also created many commissioned pieces including a recent commission for the lobby of The Confluence, the highest priced residential high-rise in Denver Co. This commission has garnered much attention and Maria was recently interviewed by The Cincinnati Enquirer and USA Today. Current gallery representation is by Art Design Consultants and Blink Art Resources in Cincinnati Ohio.
