Jackson Hole, Wyoming – December 27, 2011 – We are pleased to welcome as our guest awards judge at the 20th Annual Western Design Conference Lloyd E. Herman.  Mr. Herman spent twenty years working for the Smithsonian Institution , from 1971 through 1986 serving as Founding Director of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, considered the national craft museum of the United States.  A specialist in art made from clay, glass, wood, fibers, and metals, he was cited by the University of Washington Press as “one of the foremost authorities on America’s contemporary craft movement.”  Since retiring from the Smithsonian, he has help directed the course of other art facilities, including the Cartwright Gallery in Vancouver, B.C., and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington.  Mr. Herman has also lectured throughout the world on the topic of American crafts and written several books, including: Tales and Traditions: Storytelling in Twentieth Century American Craft.
